On Another Level: a podcast exploring the future of towns and cities

The built environment is a sector that touches us all, through the homes, schools, community spaces, shops, workplaces and public realm that facilitate our 21st century lives.

As a sector it is undergoing seismic change, as big issues and trends – the climate crisis, cyber security, hybrid working, social impact, the future of construction – reshape the built environment at a rapid pace.

To explore how the sector is changing and what it means for our cities and places, Regal London and The Clarendon Works have launched a new podcast series, called On Another Level. Just as The Clarendon Works is taking office provision in Watford to another level, the podcast examines how innovation, new approaches and fresh thinking can take the built environment to the next level.

Launched this week, the first episode explores the rise of generative AI and how it will shape the future of the built environment, looking at the risks and the opportunities, as well as exploring potential ethical issues and how AI could pose threat to a corporate reputation.

Real estate, architecture and construction have all undergone considerable disruption in recent years, from hybrid working post pandemic redefining how the traditional office is used…  to how the ESG agenda is transforming the way companies do business. But could AI be the biggest disruptor yet?

Hosted by podcaster and former Bloomberg journalist Naomi Kerbel, guests include:

  • Martha Tsigkari, head of Applied R+D at the renowned architect Foster + Partners, who with her team is pursuing state of the art research around the application of technology in architecture, including machine learning and AI.
  • Laurent Grill, an entrepreneur turned venture capitalist and a partner at JLL Spark, focused on investing in proptech start-ups and disruptive technologies and products.
  • Tom Flynn, Head of Digital at communications consultancy SEC Newgate. With a background in politics, running digital election campaigns both in the UK and abroad, Tom leads SEC Newgate UK’s team of digital and insight specialists, helping clients solve reputational issues, using digital channels to communicate with critical audiences and dealing with (and preventing) crisis situations. Recently he has developed specialist expertise in advising companies on the reputational risks of generative AI.

With Naomi the guests examine the impact of generative AI on architecture and real estate – both now and in the near future – and ask how the power of the fast-emerging technology can be best harnessed for good.

Future episodes will explore issues around cyber security and smart buildings, the skills crisis in construction and what will become of the government’s levelling up policy under should Labour form the next government.

You can find the podcast on Apple and Spotify.
